Our review of more than 500 public companies with more than $1 billion in revenue found little correlation between superior revenue growth and market-leading total shareholder returns (TSR). However, companies that simultaneously led their sectors in revenue and profit margin growth delivered two to three times greater average TSR than did fast-growing companies with flatter earnings.

The benefits of good growth are tangible and substantial, as investors reward superior TSR performance with higher enterprise value relative to EBITDA. Within the retail sector, for example, top-quartile TSR performers earned 23 percent higher 2017 EV/EBITDA ratio than did retailers in the bottom quartile.
